Scientists at King's College in London found that eczema caused by skin defects can reduce the risk of skin cancer. Studies have shown that the immune response elicited by eczema can promote the detachment of potential cancer cells, thereby preventing the formation of skin tumors.

Some scientists believe that allergic diseases can affect an individual's susceptibility to cancer, but this view has been controversial. Previous studies have pointed out that eczema is associated with a reduced risk of skin cancer, but it is difficult to draw clear conclusions through group research. This is because the severity of eczema symptoms varies from person to person, and drugs that treat eczema may have an effect on cancer.

Now, the research team at King's College London is showing for the first time that allergies caused by skin defects can indeed help the body fight skin cancer. The study was published in eLife on May 6.

Skin cancer is a common cancer. According to WHO statistics, one out of every three cancer patients diagnosed with skin cancer. Skin cancer has become an increasingly serious health problem, and studies have shown that the incidence of malignant melanoma in the UK is currently five times higher than in the 1970s. Malignant melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer.

When certain structural proteins are missing from the outermost layer of the skin, the skin barrier becomes defective, which in turn triggers eczema. The researchers constructed mice lacking three structural proteins to mimic skin defects in patients with eczema.

Subsequently, they compared the effects of two carcinogenic compounds in normal mice and skin-deficient mice. Studies have shown that benign tumors in deficient mice are six times lower than in normal mice. The researchers point out that defects in the epidermal barrier provide protection for mice and prevent the formation of benign tumors.

The researchers found that normal mice and skin-deficient mice are equally prone to carcinogenic mutations in the face of carcinogens. However, the inflammatory response in defective mice is greater, promoting the detachment of potential cancer cells from the skin. This cancer protection mechanism has certain similarities with the mechanisms that protect the skin from external (bacterial) invasion.

Professor Fiona Watt, a senior author of the article, said: "We have established a clear association between cancer susceptibility and an allergic skin disease in a mouse model. This result once again proves that interfering with the body's immune system is an important strategy for treating cancer. ”

“I hope this study will give some comfort to some eczema patients. This uncomfortable skin disease may be beneficial in some cases.”

Dr Mike Turner pointed out: "Now skin cancer is becoming more and more common in many countries. Any clue that can help the body stop the formation of tumors is valuable. It is found that eczema helps the body resist skin cancer and supports the relationship between allergic diseases and cancer prevention. The connection provides people with new ways to fight cancer."

Chemical Reagent

Chemical Reagent is the relative reference material for chemical research and component analysis. It is an important condition for scientific and technological progress. It is widely used in the synthesis, separation, qualitative and quantitative analysis of substances.
Early chemical reagents simply meant "pure chemicals used in chemical analyses and tests for the purpose of determining the composition or composition of substances". Later it was extended to "a chemical used for the purpose of a chemical reaction", and the term "chemical reagent" refers to a chemical that has long gone beyond this category. Some people think that "chemicals used in scientific experiments" can be called "chemical reagents". A more comprehensive definition of a chemical reagent may be a compound or element of various purity grades used in chemical tests, chemical analyses, chemical studies, and other tests.
