Recently, a study said that binge eating behavior affects about 10% of American adults, and the neurobiological basis of the disease is still unclear. Researchers at the Bayer Medical School Children's Nutrition Research Center of the US Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Agricultural Research and the Children's Hospital of Texas found that certain neural circuits inhibited the eating behavior of mice overeating. Their related research report was published in the journal Biological Psychiatry.

"Human-related studies have shown that dysfunction of the serotonin system or dopamine system in the brain may be related to the eating behavior of overeating," said Dr. Yong Xu, an associate professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and a senior author of the article. “However, from other perspectives, there is no direct evidence of how the serotonin system or the dopamine system affects eating behavior.”

In this study, Yong Xu and his colleagues discovered a neural circuit with a group of serotonin neurons and activation of dopamine neurons. Their findings found that activation of this neural circuit can inhibit the eating behavior of mice overeating.

In addition, there are 14 potential receptors that mediate the effects of complex serotonin in the body. Yong Xu and his colleagues discovered a specific receptor that is in the eating behavior of overeating. The role is very important. They found that the serotonin 2c receptor is expressed by dopamine neurons to inhibit people's overeating behavior.

Yong Xu pointed out that the FDA-approved drug serotonin 2c receptor agonist is currently used to treat overweight and obesity in adults, and adults use it to suppress overeating behavior.
