According to the US Consumer News and Business Channel (CNBC) reported on July 28, 360-degree virtual reality technology (VR technology) will be applied to a live broadcast of hernia surgery. Dr. Shirin Towfigh, a well-known hernia expert from Beverly Hills, will invite colleagues, the public and medical students to witness this unprecedented live video operation.

The live ambulatory operation was conducted in California on the 28th and was broadcast live by GIBLIB. 360-degree camera technology with GIBLIB digital platform provides people with a dynamic education lecture and real-time interactive access platform for surgery. This proves that VR technology has not only brought huge impacts in the economic field, but also widely affected the medical and educational fields.

GIBLIB CEO Brian Conyer said at the press conference that "360-degree virtual reality technology has changed the form of surgical education, which will perfectly show a real surgical scene and bring an immersive experience to the audience." He also said, “We want to bring a new way for the medical industry to share the medical information.”

Dr. Shirin Towfigh said that VR technology brings benefits to medical students and the medical community. In the past, students had to stay in the operating room to experience learning; today, more extensive surgery can be experienced through VR technology. Previously, live surgery was only shown by a single perspective of the surgeon; today, VR technology can demonstrate the surgical procedure from 360 degrees.

However, Dr. Shirin Towfigh also said that surgery on a live video is a challenge in itself. Surgeons may feel nervous because they will be placed under a high standard, fearing that any complicated surgical procedure will be difficult for the audience to accept. Therefore, the surgeons may take shortcuts or fail to follow their original steps, which may lead to mistakes.

According to reports, the first live video operation was a cancer operation in London, where the relevant personnel could watch it through Samsung Gear VR or Google Cardboard.
