The Philippine government continues to implement the zero tariff policy on wheat imports

Although the relevant industries strongly objected, the Department of Trade and Industry of the Philippines (DTI) continued to extend the zero tariff implementation deadline for wheat imports to ensure stable domestic supply.

The Deputy Minister of Trade of the Philippines stated that this policy was originally scheduled to expire last month. DTI still believes that it is necessary to maintain zero import tariff policy for wheat for six months.

Last month the Philippine Flour Millers Association had asked the government to restore wheat import tariffs to 3%. The association stated that the government has not achieved the goal of lowering the price of bread through the policy of zero import tariffs on wheat flour.
