According to the US technology blog site Appleinsider, Apple's patent application was announced on Thursday. The document shows that Apple intends to introduce 3D imaging technology into its mobile devices to develop a patented system similar in functionality to the Microsoft Kinect motion sensor.
Apple's patent application is called "Imaging Range Finding Device and Method." The idea behind the patent is to place a row of light emitters and photodetectors behind the optical lens, which is responsible for directing light to the target object. According to the light emitted and reflected by the device, and the light emitted by the object itself, the volume and corresponding position of the object can be determined. If one or more movable lenses are added, the accuracy of the system will be improved and can be used in harsh environments such as smokey rooms or hazy weather.
Apple's ranging patent has many uses:
- Scan and measure internal space; for 3D object scanning and pattern matching;
