Otitis media is a common disease in children. Currently, there is only one way to treat oral antibiotics. It is not only difficult to feed, but also has side effects. American researchers reported on the 14th in the United States "Scientific Translational Medicine" magazine that they developed an ear drops that not only make the treatment of children with otitis media simpler, but also more effective and safe.

The first author of the paper, Yang Rong of Harvard Medical School in the United States, said that feeding young children with antibiotics is a very difficult task. It needs to be administered 2 to 3 times a day for 7 to 10 days. If the child can not complete the antibiotic treatment of the entire treatment on time, it may lead to the emergence of antibiotic resistance; even if the drug is taken, oral antibiotics need to enter the middle ear through the blood circulation, and some children may have side effects such as vomiting, dermatitis and diarrhea. Causes intestinal flora imbalance.

Studies have also shown that taking antibiotics in childhood may cause obesity and asthma in adulthood. The use of broad-spectrum antibiotics for topical infections is also prone to antibiotic resistance. The use of ear drops to treat otitis media is a goal that people have been striving for for many years, but the eardrum is thin, but the penetration is extremely low, which becomes a barrier to the treatment of otitis media.

To this end, Yang Rong et al. added a chemical penetration enhancer and a heat-sensitive polymer on the basis of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin to prepare an ear drop solution. The chemical penetration enhancer allows ciprofloxacin to penetrate the intact eardrum into the middle ear. The heat-sensitive polymer causes the ear drops to form a colloid on the eardrum, and the colloid can be attached to the eardrum for a long time, thereby achieving one-time administration and continuous release of the drug during the treatment. The colloid will degrade automatically within 3 weeks with no residue on the eardrum.

In the animal experiment, 10 chinchillas suffering from otitis media were all cured after 7 days of dropping the ear drops, and the eardrum was intact without any signs of inflammation or tissue damage. Totoro also did not have the common side effects of oral antibiotics such as diarrhea, and no traces of antibiotics were found in the blood. My Neighbor Totoro is a murine animal with the ear structure and function most similar to humans. It is the most commonly used animal model for studying ear diseases.

Daniel Cohen, a researcher and professor at Harvard Medical School, said: "This avoids the drawbacks of oral antibiotics, reduces the side effects caused by oral antibiotics and antibiotic resistance, making treatment convenient and effective. Parents only need to bring a child to see a doctor. There is also no need to forcibly feed antibiotics to young children. In areas where medical care is difficult, this convenience can greatly improve the treatment rate of otitis media and reduce the possibility of permanent injury or even death."

Researchers are currently preparing human clinical trials and are preparing to start their own businesses or license technology to pharmaceutical companies to produce ear drops.

Otitis media is an inflammatory lesion involving all or part of the structure of the middle ear. According to statistics, about one-third of children will have 6 otitis media before the age of 7. Otitis media can cause permanent hearing damage, and the resulting intracranial complications can even lead to death.
