According to reports, over 70% of the onion products in India are harvested in the late winter season. However, thanks to better climatic conditions, onion yields harvested in the autumn harvest season are also more optimistic, resulting in the current supply of onions in the Indian market is very abundant and oversupply, thus driving down the onion market prices. In order to ensure the benefits of onion growers, the Indian government has asked the Central Government of India to eliminate the minimum export price (MEP) of onions. At the same time, in the whole year of last year, the Indian government has changed the minimum export price of onions as many as 13 times. The current Indian government sets the minimum export price of onions at US$170 per ton.

According to another report, in 2012, Maharashtra produced approximately 5 million tons of onions and exported about 1.2 million tons. Due to the extremely unique spicy nature of India's onions, demand for Indian onions has been strong in the U.S. and other markets.
