Most patients with liver metastases from colorectal cancer received systemic chemotherapy. In order to clarify the significance of complete response to these patients, 38 patients with liver metastases from colorectal cancer were included in the study. All patients had no extrahepatic metastatic lesions, and the number of liver metastases before chemotherapy was less than 10. After treatment, CT and ultrasound showed that one or more lesions disappeared. Within 4 weeks after the imaging examination, the patient underwent surgery and intraoperative ultrasound. At least 1 year follow-up after surgery.
The results showed that after receiving chemotherapy in patients with liver metastases from colorectal cancer, CT showed that 66 liver metastases disappeared. Although CT suggested that the 66 lesions had a complete response to treatment, 20 of them were persistent in the surgery. The remaining 46 lesions were not visible during surgery, and 15 lesions were removed during surgery. Pathological examination showed that there were 12 cancer cells in there; 31 lesions were not removed, and 1 year follow-up showed that 23 of them had recurrence in situ. . Overall, 55 (83%) of the 66 liver imaging lesions that showed complete response were persistent or gross residual lesions, or early recurrence.
Research suggests that in most patients with colorectal cancer liver metastases receiving chemotherapy, CT suggests that complete response to metastatic lesions does not mean that the lesions have been cured, and most of the lesions still have cancer cells remaining, so it is still necessary to remove these metastatic lesions.
