In the cartoon Popeye, spinach is a food full of energy. Recently, scientists have found a way to extract real energy from this kind of vegetable. Using this method, scientists invented a so-called "spinach battery," which can last for more than three weeks and can be used on cell phones, laptops, and other mobile devices. Scientists use the principle of photosynthesis of green plants. Spinach is used primarily because of its high chlorophyll content, its low price, and its use in all seasons. Although photosynthesis can convert sunlight into energy, it is currently in the early stages of the experiment. This kind of battery can't generate electricity by itself. It uses only light energy to extend battery life. The scientists first dissolved spinach in a centrifuge and extracted proteins from it; then injected a peptide detergent into the protein pores; then injected the mixture into plastic, gold, indium tin oxide, and transparent. The gap between layers of semiconductor material is made into a chip. The chip is both durable and easy to repair: When the battery stops working, it is easy to add protein inside. So far, this chip has only developed the layer of spinach solution, so it can only produce a little weak current. Scientists plan to increase other levels to generate more energy. At present, this research is still in its infancy, and scientists predict that it will not be commercially available within 10 years. This is the first time that humans have extracted basic substances like current from photosynthesis. This finding shows that there is indeed a way that can be directly applied to circuits by combining the molecules produced by biological action.
